THIS picture was taken on Wednesday, April 4 among the stones of Avebury.
The man with the boots and neckerchief is an archaeologist called Michael Pitts, who also ran a local restaurant.
And the young woman he is talking to?
She is Her Imperial Highness Princess Sayoko Nori, sister of current Japanese Emperor Naruhito. She went on to become an ornithologist and Shinto priestess.
A typed description taped to the back of the photo says only that 15-year-old princess made a private visit to the village and was told of the stone circle’s history.
Perhaps a Rewind reader can tell us more about the occasion.
