ENGINE oil jostled with stretch covers for sofas in the window of what is now Debenhams when this photograph was taken.
Then a branch of the Bon Marche chain, the department store was the showpiece of the newly-redeveloped Parade in the town centre.
As the prices are in pre-decimal currency, the picture can be dated to the end of the 1960s or the beginning of the 1970s.
Another clue to the picture being about half a century old is the fact that prams and pushchairs were so heavy and bulky that they had to be parked outside while parents did their shopping.
Although the window displays are rather different today, the windows themselves are easily recognisable.
