A MAN died after being crushed under a car on a Swindon industrial estate.
Fire engines, ambulances, police cars and a forensic investigation team went to the Marshgate Industrial Estate in Greenbridge after a mechanic at JB Autos made the discovery.
Police sealed off the back yard of the business while workers at neighbouring firms spoke of their shock at the sight of so many 999 crews.
Jamie Hartshorn from MJ Church said: “It’s quite a busy industrial estate but nothing like this has ever happened before.
“I started work at 6am and didn’t see or hear anything until around 9am when suddenly there were fire engines, police cars and ambulances everywhere.”
The emergency services spent most of the morning at the industrial estate.
A passer-by who wanted to remain anonymous told the Adver: “I saw the fire engines parked up and a firefighter looking worried so I wandered over to see what was going on.
“I spoke to one of the mechanics and he said he went to open the security gate that morning and saw a body under one of the cars not moving.
“He didn’t open the gate and called the police straight away. Stuff tends to go missing around here and things are nicked, which is why there’s a security gate.”
It is not yet known why the man, who lived in the town, was under the car or how he died.
A Wiltshire Police spokeswoman said: “Officers are continuing to investigate the circumstances which led to a man becoming trapped beneath a car at a Swindon garage.
“We were called around 8.45am by a member of staff from JB Autos on Stratton Road in Swindon who discovered the person on their arrival at work.
“Sadly, the man, from the Swindon area, was confirmed to have died at the scene.
“Formal identification has yet to take place but the man’s next of kin have been informed and our thoughts are with them at this difficult time.
“We can confirm it is not believed to be suspicious at this time or classed as an industrial incident.
“The health and safety executive has not been informed because the man was not an employee of JB Autos.
“Anyone in the area overnight or earlier this morning who may have seen anything suspicious or who may have dash cam footage that could help our enquiry is asked to call 101.”
