ENDEARING animal stories were as popular in the Adver 85 years ago as they are today.
One of our most prominent articles this week in 1934 was about a Shrivenham school teacher, Mr FD Dance, whose cocker spaniel, Don, fell 80 feet down a well.
Mr Dance immediately climbed down and rescued the creature, earning himself an RSPCA accolade in the process.
He and Don were pictured, as were members of a junior farmers’ club who showed their animals at Swindon Christmas Market.
