A Toothill man has appeared in court charged with the attempted murder of 26-year-old in Rodbourne.

Appearing before Swindon Magistrates’ Court this morning wearing a grey tracksuit, Mohammed Shajeed Ali, 20, of Warneford Close, spoke only to confirm his personal details.

The Swindon-born warehouse worker entered no pleas to a charge of attempted murder.

It follows a hit-and-run on Rodbourne Road on Friday, March 6. A 26-year-old man, who was named in court, was struck by a Nissan Juke outside The Dolphin pub at around 3.30pm.

He was airlifted to Southmead Hospital, Bristol, where he remains in a life-threatening condition. He is understood to be in a coma.

Prosecutor Keith Ballinger said: “There are still concerns about the seriousness of his injuries.”

The incident is being treated as drugs related by detectives.

Magistrates remanded Ali in custody to appear before Bristol Crown Court for a plea hearing on April 20. Ali nodded as chairman of the bench Martin Clarke announced he would be remanded in custody.

Solicitor Helen Ahmet appeared for the defence.

Members of Ali’s family packed the public gallery along with friends of the defendant's alleged victim.
