Discount supermarket chain Lidl has announced it is hoping to open its Greenbridge store in early 2021.

Taking over the old Homebase Unit at the site, the new store will create up to 30 new jobs and house an in-store bakery, customer toilet, baby changing and dual parking facilities.

Work is expected to start over the coming months.

The new store at Greenbridge Retail Park will be Lidl's fourth store in the town.

It opened up its third at the Orbital Shopping Centre last month.

Glen Stidever, Lidl GB’s regional head of property, commented: “Lidl could not be more delighted to have received planning permission for our 4th store in Swindon.

"The popularity of our existing stores, including the Orbital Retail Park, which opened its doors to Swindon residents just last month, gives us the confidence to expand our offering within the town.

"Greenbridge Retail Park is a popular retail destination with a wide range of occupiers. I’d personally like to take this opportunity to thank our loyal customers for their continued support, and very much look forward to opening this store and offering our fresh, quality, great value products in the not too distant future.”

Plans for the store were submitted to the Swindon Borough Council's planning portal earlier this year.

The plans added the opening hours are currently proposed to be 8am- 10pm on Monday to Saturdays and 10am- 6pm on Sundays.

It adds the shopping trolleys will be controlled by a coin deposit system, saying: “Lidl’s experiences at existing stores confirms that this system is an effective means of ensuring trolleys are returned to the trolley park and secured appropriately.”

Alongside Lidl, toy store Smyths has submitted a planning application to open at the old PC World unit, at the back of the site which has sat empty since it moved in with Currys.

There is yet to be an update from Smyths about when the store will open.

The last three months have already seen additions to Greenbridge with the opening of a 24-hour gym.

But there are still some empty units at the site including Mothercare, which shut last year.

Elsewhere in the town, the Orbital Shopping Centre could see the addition of a drive-through coffee shop and a restaurant.

The announcement of new stores comes as a boost for the town which saw plenty of closures last year in the centre.
