Hundreds of protesters walked from Regent Circus to Wharf Green as part of the Black Lives Matter movement.

The death of George Floyd after a white officer knelt on his neck for almost nine minutes, has triggered a tide of protests in the UK.

The demonstrators in Swindon chanted the name of the Minnesotan man, and some delivered emotional speeches on the steps of the Regent Circus complex.

Here’s what you told us on Facebook...

Tom Farmer: “People were socially distanced, and it was a peaceful protest. The people who are against it really don’t realise how privileged they are.”

Jordan Drew: “Amazing effort by all involved. Sadly, some people will try to ruin this wonderful moment of solidarity with their comments. Don’t allow the negativity win.”

Joanne Aziz: “So proud to see our town standing up for racism and inequality.”

Harry Ethan Hall: “Now, imagine how many people would be there if Covid-19 wasn’t happening right now.

“It’s not political movement between left and right. It’s fighting for justice in a self-proclaimed free country.”

Andrea Ivey: “I have not hugged my granddaughter for 13 weeks! No, racist comments there at all, just saying how much longer is going to have to go on because of people not listening to the rules and distancing and getting rid of this virus.”

Michaela Johnston: “I’m too busy saving my own life! I don’t feel the need to protest to prove I’m disgusted by what happened and is happening in the USA and a lot of other countries.”

Chris Ellis: “I’m sorry but this is utter madness. I’ve had to remain working throughout the whole Covid-19 crisis because of being a key worker.

“I’ve not been able to see or cuddle my children.

“Now thanks to hundreds of people lining the streets this crisis will continue.

“I don’t condone what happened in the states in any way, shape or form but this is sheer stupidity to rally now. Watch that R number increase.”

James Tinsley: “You can see why we’re having all these protests, it’s clear that there’s a lot of education needed.

“All the people that have put ‘All lives matter’ go put in in Google and read up on it.”

Emily Winslow: “Nice to see half of Swindon is completely missing a very large point and most definitely uneducated in what goes on outside this town.”

Tommy Griffiths: “If you’re shouting, “All lives matter” then it’s pretty obvious you don’t understand what the BLM movement stand for.”

Leeanne Lee: “Don’t just blame the protesters.

“A week or so ago people couldn’t wait to dust off their two pieces and speedos.

“The R is 1 plus in the South West and other places. That’s not due to the protesters. That’s due to packed beaches, VE Day celebrations, shops opening etc.”

Rickie Leyton: “If I could have been there, I would have.

“Well done Swindon for an amazing turn out and keeping it peaceful.

“unfortunately, it’s a worldwide issue and we all, black, white, brown, whatever colour of your skin is, need to unite and fight against racism.

“I understand people wasn’t happy with the protest especially during this pandemic, but I really do believe that if what happened in America never happened then maybe these protest would not have happened at this time.

“Though, people really do need to educate themselves on this issue.”

Chris Small: “There was a lot of people but I’d rather if people leave their homes, they do so for a worthy reason rather than driving to Bournemouth or Southend for some fish and chips and a dip in the sea.”
