THE owners of a corner shop targeted by racist vandals have spoken of their shock.
The words 'ISIS work here' were spray-painted on the shutters and pavement in front of the Premier convenience store in Cavendish Square at the weekend, sparking disgust in the community.
A CCTV camera was damaged and police confirmed they are now on the hunt for the culprits.
A statement from the Patel family, who have run the store for more than 10 years, said: “We’re shocked and disappointed.
"The area is normally so nice they have always been so good to us.
“The community around here is so lovely, it’s really surprising. This is the first time it’s happened.
“Our uncle used to have this shop before us and he never had any problems either.”
The owners did not want to comment on who might be responsible for the damage. The paint has since been washed off.
Chris Watts, chairman of South Swindon Parish Council, said: “I’m absolutely appalled by such graffiti.
“I just don’t know what’s going on in people’s heads if they think this is acceptable behaviour.
“I know the Parks and Walcot community will also feel appalled by this and it doesn’t represent the people of the town.”
On Facebook, two of the store's customers said they were saddened by the incident.
Tony Laughlin said: “Very sad. I use this shop all the time and the people there are lovely.”
Carrie Louise added: “The people who run this shop are absolutely lovely. I am so sorry to hear this.
“Shame on those that did this.”
A Wiltshire Police spokeswoman said: “We are investigating an incident of criminal damage to a convenience store in Whitbourne Avenue, Park South, which is believed to have occurred overnight between June 21-22.
“Racial abuse was sprayed in yellow paint across the shop front and damage was caused to a CCTV camera.
“Anyone who witnessed the incident should call 101 and quote crime reference number 54200059601.”
