A family butcher and farm shop in Swindon is in the running to be named Britain’s Best Small Shop of 2020.

T.H. Burroughs Family Butchers was was first established nearly 80 years ago and is now being managed by the family’s third generation,

Founder Thomas Howard Burrough's grandson Graham resurrected the business in 2008 and moved into new premises in Swindon in 2017.

Now it has been picked for the shortlist of a major award in the Best Small Shops competition. The winner will be revealed next month.

The shop offers a broad range of meats, fish, cheeses, olives, vegetables, homemade pies, pastries and frozen goodies. Staff create their own recipes and use local suppliers where possible to reduce the carbon footprint.

Graham said: "We've been lucky as a food outlet to remain open during Covid-19 and to be able to provide to the community.

“In the last few months, customers have been actively choosing to shop locally, certainly for quality meat, rather than going to the larger supermarkets.

"We like to stock things from local suppliers like honey, art, eggs and beer. Our customers have been very understanding during the process and we've kept them updated through our website and social media.

"Regular customers in isolation were able to request deliveries to their homes. "

The awards are managed by the Independent Retailers Confederation and celebrates the commitment and creativity of independent retailers on the UK’s high streets as well as the central role they play in their communities.

Chair Mark Walmsley said: “This has been a particularly challenging year for small, independent retailers and many have come through to this point through innovation, quality of product and service, a commitment to serve their local communities and a large dose of determination.

“As more and more people have been forced to stay home and work from home, we have seen just how much we all value local independent shops and want to see them not just survive, but also thrive. These shops offer choice, diversity and genuine customer service. And, after what has been a rather dark year, that has to be worth celebrating.”
