Discerning foodies across Wiltshire still have plenty of delights to choose from after lockdown, as restaurants across the county have retained their Michelin stars in the newly-published 2021 list.
While there have been no new stars awarded to Wiltshire restaurants, a number of establishments have held onto their stars from previous years.
Here is a full list below, with their descriptions from Michelin.
Whatley Manor, The Dining Room, Easton Grey, Malmesbury, SN16 0RB - Two stars and a new 'green' star for sustainability (Two stars means excellent cooking worth a detour)
"Twelve acres of formal gardens surround this charming Cotswold stone house, which dates back to 1802 and offers lovely views over the countryside. Head Chef Niall Keating oversees both the elegant brasserie and the intimate dining room; the latter is the best place to sample dishes packed full of his personality. Here, the room is neutral and serene, and that keeps the focus where it matters: firmly on the food.
Accomplished modern cooking has a well-measured originality and many Asian elements (inspired by Niall’s travels) feature on the appealing multi-course set menus. To start, you are invited into the kitchen for snacks. Service is charming and attentive, and the enthusiastic sommelier offers some creative suggestions, with organic, biodynamic and natural wines to the fore.
Luxurious modern bedrooms come with sumptuous bathrooms."
White Horse Inn, Compton Bassett, SN11 8RG, United Kingdom - Michelin Plate (for very good food)
"The White Horse dates back over a century: the cosy bar is where you’ll find the regulars, while most diners head for the rustic room next door.
For traditionalists there are pub classics; for those with more adventurous tastes there’s the à la carte. Beyond the large garden are eight snug bedrooms."
Weymouth Arms, 12 Emwell Street, Warminster, BA12 8JA - Michelin Plate
"Grade II listed building with plenty of history. It’s immensely characterful, with wood panelling, antiques and lithographs, as well as two fireplaces originally intended for nearby Longleat House. Cooking is fresh and fittingly traditional. Cosy bedrooms have charming original fittings."
Bath Arms, Horningsham, BA12 7LY - Michelin Plate
"Sample some local ales in the open-fired bar or on the delightful terrace of this stylishly updated 18C country inn on the Longleat Estate.
The grand dining room is the perfect place to enjoy appealing dishes of local and estate produce. Stay over in one of the modern country house style bedrooms."
The Compasses Inn, Lower Chicksgrove, Tisbury, SP3 6NB - Michelin Plate
"Hidden down narrow lanes in the Nadder Valley, is this laid-back thatched inn with 14C origins. It’s a hugely characterful place and has a pleasant terrace and garden. Fresh, tasty dishes mix pub classics and some eclectic international influences. Bedrooms blend modern and antique furnishings."
Bybrook, Castle Combe, SN14 7HR, United Kingdom -1 Michelin star (signifies a 'very good restaurant')
"This fine 14C manor house sits within 365 acres of formal gardens and parkland in a picture-postcard village. A sweeping drive leads up to the main building and its immensely charming interior features characterful oak panelling and a host of cosy open-fired lounges.
"Dining here is a very formal experience: drinks and nibbles are served in the bar before dinner in the cavernous dining room with its large feature wall, flower arrangements, leather chairs and immaculately laid solid oak tables.
"Local and kitchen garden produce plays a pivotal role in the cooking, which closely follows the seasons. Refined, carefully prepared dishes arrive in tried-and-tested combinations but have modern overtones, and presentation is very precise.
"Luxurious bedrooms are split between the house and mews cottages.
Pythouse Kitchen Garden, West Hatch, Tisbury, SP3 6PA - Michelin Plate
"A charming red-brick potting shed and glass extension, which sit inside an 18C walled garden. The terrace leads down to the kitchen garden and there’s a fire-pit where many of the rustic, flavour-packed dishes are cooked. They serve breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, and dinner Fri and Sat. The monthly event nights are a hit.
Whatley Manor, Grey's Brasserie, Easton Grey, Malmesbury, SN16 0RB - Michelin Plate
"The slightly less formal alternative to Whatley Manor’s ‘Dining Room’ is this elegant grey-hued brasserie; ask for a booth or dine in the garden in the summer months. Salad and vegetables from the kitchen garden feature on modern menus with a British bias.
Bell, The Square, Ramsbury, SN8 2PE - Michelin Plate
"The charming 300 year old Bell is the hub of this lovely village. It’s split into four parts: a café, bar, restaurant and bedrooms. The short bar menu offers appealing pub favourites while the restaurant serves ambitious modern dishes. The surrounding estate provides much of the produce.2
Bunch of Grapes, 14 Silver Street, Bradford-on-Avon, BA15 1JY - Michelin Plate
"The Bunch of Grapes might be the oldest pub in this historic town but it now comes with an appealing modern edge and a deli selling tempting treats. Downstairs has a pubby feel, while upstairs has more of a restaurant vibe"
Restaurant Hywel Jones by Lucknam Park, Colerne, SN14 8AZ - 1 Michelin star
"A mile-long tree-lined drive sets the scene as you approach this grand Palladian mansion. Rich, elegant décor, luxurious furnishings and sumptuous fabrics feature throughout, from the beautiful bedrooms to the drawing rooms where pre-meal drinks are enjoyed. This is country house dining at its finest – opulent, formal and sophisticated – and it suits the grand environment.
"Hywel Jones has been at the helm since 2004 and his experience shows. Expertly crafted dishes rely on classic techniques but have a light, modern style, which provides a pleasing contrast to the grandeur of the surroundings. Ingredients are top quality, he isn’t afraid to push the boundaries and, as a proud Welshman, you’ll find a few nods to his homeland too. Desserts are a highlight and service comes with as much polish as the silver."
Bell, Bath Road, West Overton, SN8 1QD - Michelin Plate
"A simple, friendly pub, rescued from oblivion by a local couple, who hired an experienced pair to run it. The menu mixes pub classics with Mediterranean-influenced dishes; presentation is modern but not at the expense of flavour."
Potting Shed, The Street, Crudwell, SN16 9EW - Michelin Plate
"Spacious, light-filled pub with contemporary décor, exposed beams and a relaxing feel. Monthly changing menus offer wholesome, satisfying dishes, with vegetables and herbs from their garden."
Beckford Arms, Fonthill Gifford, Tisbury, SP3 6PX - Michelin Plate
"A charming 18C inn with a beamed dining room, a rustic bar and a lovely country house sitting room; there's also a delightful terrace and garden with hammocks and a petanque pitch. Flavour-packed cooking has a modern edge. Bedrooms provide thoughtful comforts; 2 smart duplex suites are a 3min drive away."
Red Lion Freehouse, East Chisenbury, SN9 6AQ - Michelin Plate
"A pretty thatched pub on the edge of Salisbury Plain, made more characterful by a hotchpotch of decorative touches. The generously flavoured dishes demonstrate that this is a classically trained kitchen; the fixed price menu is great value. Well-equipped bedrooms have private terraces overlooking the river."
Longs Arms, South Wraxall, BA15 2SB - Michelin Plate
"It’s hard not to like this handsome Bath stone pub, set opposite a medieval church in a sleepy village. It’s a family run affair with the chef-owner proudly preparing a mix of pub classics and few more modern creations. Be sure to try the home-smoked meats and fish and the delicious homemade ice creams."
