Highworth Town Council has warned people not to use water troughs at the Old Golf Course allotment site - because they have become contaminated with human excrement.
UPDATE: The travellers have left
The council made the announcement shortly after a group of travellers settled on Highworth Rec.
In its post, the Town Council issued a statement stating it was working closely with other local authorities and bodies in relation to the travellers, who moved in on Tuesday night and caused the leisure centre to suspend its actitities.
The council said: “Highworth Town Council is working closely with Swindon Borough Council, Wiltshire Police and Highworth Town Junior Football Club regarding the group of travellers at the Lower Rec site.”
Residents of Highworth claim to have received abuse from the group of travellers, with one mother saying that they upset her four year-old daugther.
Local businesses have also had to react, with several pubs and the nearby Highworth Recreation Centre Leisure Centre shutting to prevent trouble.
