TWO bereaved parents have joined forces to start a charity aimed at helping others through the unimaginable heartbreak of suddenly losing a partner.
Abby Lever and Jamie Davey know all too well what its like to go through it.
Abby, 30, lost her husband Ewen, a plumber, in December last year.
Described by her at the time as one in a million, he died at the scene of a collision involving his van, a lorry and a 4x4, between Burford and Lechlade.
“He was our world and suddenly, in a split second, he was gone. It has been the hardest and loneliest journey and one I never expected to be on from the age of 30," she told the Adver.
“Losing your life partner and then battling the world of parenthood alone, is scary, it’s hard. But we must give credit to our children. They are heroes for pulling us through it every day.
“I felt like I was the only person in Swindon to ever have gone through this.”
Jamie Davey, 37, who had lost his own partner Kelly Price a matter of weeks before, made contact and the pair then supported each other through their bereavement.
Abby and Ewen had two children, Ayla aged four and 11-month-old Poppy. Jamie and Kelly also had two girls Lilia,12 and Florrie, six.
“Through my loss and heartache, I have made a true friend. A local guy who five weeks before I lost Ewen, lost his partner of 17 years.
"A family of four, with two young girls, left in complete pieces, just like my family. He reached out to me when I least expected, and showed me I wasn’t alone, that there were other people who knew my pain, who knew my babies’ pain.”
Jamie said: “Five weeks after losing Kelly, I was scrolling through Facebook and my heart sank.
"A friend of Kelly’s had posted about her sister, who had lost her husband suddenly in a car accident, leaving behind two small girls and his wife Abby.
"I felt this strong desire to reach out to Abby, to let her know that she isn’t alone in this awful world of grief, to let her know that I know what she’s going through and I could be a friend if she ever needed one.”
The pair then decided to set up Wiltshire Moon and Stars, a charity designed to help bereaved families and children
“It’s something I wish existed for me. It’s a social charity for kids to meet other kids like them. I have lent on Jamie to support me and he understands how I feel daily. However, our children of all ages sometimes don’t have that social circle to rely on. We would like to build a support network for them also, and other parents.”
The charity will also be a tribute to the memory of Ewen and Kelly - the name and logo have been inspired by them.
“Since we lost Ewen, Ayla my eldest daughter has always said her daddy is on the moon. We wave at the moon every time we see it.
"And Kelly is a diamond in the sky. Jamie and the girls often look to the stars and remember the kind-hearted loving mum she was.”
The pair will be hosting a number of fundraising events to raise money for the charity and have already announced their first one. Abby and Jamie will be skydiving out of a plane on September 5. They want to raise £1,000 to help create a community of solo parents and children who have lost a mum or a dad.
