The man who died following a robbery in Upper Stratton has been named.

Martin Brown, aged 54, died last month, after the incident in late January.

His wallet and its contents were taken in the robbery on Meadowcroft late in the evening of January 27, which left him with injuries described as “very serious”.

He was later found in nearby Beechcroft Road at around 6am the following morning.

Mr Brown, from the Penhill area, was rushed to hospital but he “very quickly deteriorated”, Swindon Crown Court heard on Friday.

Rob Welling told the court: “The background is that very sadly the complainant Martin Brown, having been found in the morning of the 28th January at about 6am and taken to hospital, very quickly deteriorated and was put in an induced coma, and subsequently on 7th February he died.”

He was speaking at the plea and trial preparation hearing of Paul Tony Warren, who pleaded guilty to robbery.

Warren, from Victoria Road in Old Town, admitted taking Mr Brown’s wallet and its contents.

The 24-year-old, who appeared via video link from Bullingdon prison, where he has been remanded into custody, had also been charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

However, he was not required to enter a plea to that charge, and the case was adjourned pending further enquiries to be made by the prosecution to ascertain the circumstances surrounding Mr Brown’s death.

It is not yet known whether the charges will change following the victim’s death.

Mr Welling, prosecuting, said it could take months for the report to come back and for more to be known.

Judge Peter Crabtree adjourned the case for 12 weeks, where it will be listed for mention and a final decision will be made on the venue for the trial.

Speaking to Warren, who he remanded back into custody, the judge said: “You’ve heard what I’ve said in the circumstances. You’ll be produced over the video link in May and we’ll see where we are.

“I don’t think there’s anything else I can do in this case until we get more information.”

He will next appear before the same court on May 24.

DCI Phil Walker, of the Major Crime Team, said: “Our thoughts are with Martin’s family at this difficult time – they are being supported by specially trained family liaison officers.”

Meanwhile, a police spokesperson added: "Our thoughts are with the man’s family at this difficult time."
