Roadworks in Oxford Road are causing distress and a complete mess, according to a resident.

The roadworks which have been going on for the past month have been causing chaos for people who live along the busy road.

Now, a local resident says the roadworks along the road are incredibly dangerous.

The 52-year-old who asked not to be named, said: “I’ve had two near misses because I couldn’t see to get off the drive.

“Outside the house, there was a large digger, I had to go right out of my drive to go to Abingdon. I pulled out and there was a car going extremely fast through the traffic lights.

“Luckily the car braked and I accelerated as fast as I could.

“People are speeding through the traffic lights, which means they are going at high speed to get through the queues and it’s causing a safety issue.”

The man, an engineer, added the workers kept leaving the road in a mess.

Swindon Advertiser:

“We are quite distressed about it, there’s cement and mess everywhere," he said.

“It’s an absolute nightmare, we are so anxious and stressful, day to day it’s terrible."

The resident called for the council to close the road to traffic so that residents could leave their drives safely.

“There have been many occasions where we haven’t been able to get out of our house and get back into our driveway safely. Currently, one of the neighbours cannot get off his drive," he said.

“My dad is quite old and he is unable to walk now, anyone who is disabled has not been able to get down there.”

A spokesperson for Swindon Borough Council, said: " A Swindon Borough Council spokesperson said: “The nature of the works at Oxford Road means our contractor has to work across the accesses to people’s driveways and we appreciate this will cause inconvenience to local residents.

“The contractor for the scheme, R&W Civil Engineering, has informed those living nearby of the work that needs to take place in advance and has closely engaged with residents throughout.

“We expect the work along Oxford Road to finish soon, but in the meantime residents can raise any concerns by emailing: Nythe Junction Nythe@swindon.gov.uk
