THERE are growing calls for the Prime Minister and Rishi Sunak to resign because both will receive fines from the police for attending parties during lockdown.
Officials confirmed that Boris Johnson and the Chancellor of the Exchequer will be punished for breaking the Covid safety guidelines, along with more than 50 other people - including Mr Johnson's wife Carrie.
Labour have pushed for resignations at the highest level of government - and the political party's Swindon branch wants the town's MPs and council leader to support these calls.
Coun Jim Grant said: “I agree with Keir Starmer that both Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak have broken the law and therefore should resign.
“I further call on David Renard, as Conservative leader of the council, and Swindon’s two Conservative MPs to support calls for the prime minister and chancellor to resign or else explain why they appear to be condoning their lawbreaking.”
The Adver approached both South Swindon MP Sir Robert Buckland and North Swindon MP Justin Tomlinson for comment, but by 5pm on Tuesday, neither had responded.
The Metropolitan Police is investigating alleged Covid law-breaking at 12 gatherings in Whitehall and Downing Street.
These fines relate to a gathering held on the Prime Minister's birthday on June 19, 2020.
The Covid-19 Bereaved Families for Justice group said there was "simply no way either the prime minister or chancellor can continue".
A Swindon Labour spokesman said on Twitter: “Seems like the choice is clear for the people of Swindon on May 5.
"Do you want to vote for the Labour party run by the former director of public prosecutions, or the Conservative party run by a liar who got fined for breaking the very laws that he has written?”
The news of the fines sparked outrage among Adver readers.
Matthew Pearce said: "Let’s just put this is context. While the Queen was waiting to bury her husband, the Conservatives were partying. Whilst thousands couldn’t visit dying loved ones, the Conservatives were partying.
"Rule makers can be rule breakers when you are a Conservative."
Tony Barton said: "Both should be long gone."
Davide Petraccini said: "A joke of a government!"
Susan Chance said: "The whole lot of them are wastes of space, they make me sick, fed up with them and they all should go."
Gwen Cremin said: "Well it better be more than 50 pounds, that's peanuts to them
"Hope it's thousands, that's still not enough."
Alan Wilson said: "This just about sums up what they take the British people for. One rule for us, one rule for them.
"Johnson repeatedly told Parliament that as far as he was led to believe, no rules had been broken.
"He and his cronies have been economical with the truth. If any of them had an ounce of integrity, they'd offer to resign."
