THE people of Haydon Wick were greeted with a blast from the past as they partied for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee.

A Lancaster Bomber from the Battle of Britain memorial flight conducted a flypast to the amazement of those enjoying the event.

The aircraft conducted three flypasts, flying over the King George V Playing Fields in different directions.

Hundreds who attended looked up to the sky to witness one of the most important aircraft ever constructed in the UK.

The Lancaster Bomber played a huge role in victory during the Second World War, conducting overnight raids on German territory.

In 1943, the aircraft was used as part of the Dambusters raid which was conducted by RAF bomber command.

The Möhne and Edersee dams were breached, causing catastrophic flooding of the Ruhr valley and villages in the Eder valley.

This set back Germany's efforts to produce weapons and ammunition.

19 Lancaster Bombers were used during the operation making it one of the most famous aircraft in the world along with the Spitfire.

Speaking after the flypast, councillor Vinay Manro - the chairman of Haydon Wick Parish Council - said: “We’re very lucky that we were able to organise it in a short space of time.

“Credit to the team for organising it and credit to the pilot for doing the flypast today.”

Parish council clerk Georgina Morgan-Dean added: “It made the day quite spectacular and it was great to see so many camera’s pointing up to the sky taking photographs.

“A unique moment to mark this special day.”
