We asked readers what was the one thing they felt was missing from the centre of Swindon.

The question prompted a big reaction on social media.

Here's what some of them told us...

Milena Bianca: "Shops that aren’t card shops and Greggs. It’s a common answer I’m sure but it’s true and also it just look depressing I remember it being way better 10 years ago."

Paul Bogie: "The old guy playing the harmonica near Primark."

Jonathan Zippo: "Soul, shops, organisation, free parking, good roads, good lighting, morale."

Liz Lucas: "Love. It needs a lot of love, care and new vision. Without a vision it will perish."

Sandy Arnold: "People, I went into town last week with my daughter Wow, what a waste of time. Half the shops have shut down, nothing worth going into town for, one bit of tumble weed blowing around."

Steve Gardiner: "Oxford has Westgate. Bristol has Cabot circus and Reading has the oracle.

"Swindon has the Brunel centre. Spot the difference

Karen Benton: "Shops decent shops like we use to have, too many coffee, card shops , there's nothing in there to go in any more, needs a deep clean too, free parking for people.

"I would rather go to the outlet Village at least it’s clean and got some lovely shops there."

Steve Evans: "A nice canal basin surrounded by cafes and restaurants."

Stuart Sharland: "Character."

Carol Dawkins: "Decent shops. Swindon used to have a lovely shopping centre but it's more like a ghost town now."

Rachel Chaplin: "A touch of class!"

Hazel Jones-Evans: "Rachel Chaplin drove round the one way system earlier past the old Morrisons and Bower & Bailey Solicitors and in the middle of the island were some alchies drinking and shooting up as if it was the most normal and acceptable thing in the world!

"It wasn't even lunchtime."

Pauline Edmondson: "We haven't got a town centre. It is a disgrace ith as all been ruined. I for one don't even go to town. Nothing there and the council don't seem to worry, so who ever is in charge of our town you should be ashamed of yourself."

Kyle Garmont: "One thing? That's hard.Multiple things, however, that's easy.

Something that's enjoyable to do. Some kind of life, or greenery. Police that get rid of the druggies.

"Decent or good shops that aren't clothes or coffee related.

"Some form of hygiene, or at least something that makes the cold drab grey look less dirty. On that note, a colour that doesn't sit just outside greyscale.

Decent pricing of rent for shops, and some level of reassurance that their windows won't be smashed every second day. Something nice to look at. Like, literally anything nice to look at."

David Lynch: "There is no centre of Swindon any more. Shopping has changed, services have changed, districts have changed.

"I replied to a similar Swindon Advertiser question probably a decade ago.

"We need to benchmark the success of places like Birmingham or Reading and consider a way to reintroduce a canal through the centre and attract new businesses to the area.

"The collateral benefits of introducing waterways back into our towns and cities has been evidenced in a myriad of urban areas up and down the country.

"Will SBC ever be that brave or creative? Doubtful."

Jane Ellis: "Shops especially a large supermarket. Tescos Extra doesn't count..Morrisons preferably."

Theresa Chand: "A department store with all the trimmings ie clothes, shoes, etc."

Gordon Moore: "Heart … it’s been ripped out."
