SWINDON speedway manager Alun Rossiter is urging fans to show their support when revised stadium plans are submitted to councillors next week.

The new stadium venue, with speedway and greyhound tracks, also includes plans for 450 houses and 16,000 square metres of office space.

The financial package is different from previous plans and it offers Swindon Council more of a say over the final appearance of the project.

Planning officers have recommended the scheme is approved at Tuesday's planning committee meeting. If all goes to plan the venue could all be completed before the start of the speedway season in 2010.

"It looks like it will go ahead but we can't take anything for granted," said Alun.

"We still need fans to come to the meeting at the council and show their support to remind councillors how important speedway is to Swindon."

Senior planner Ian Halsall said: "If all goes well then work could start in the autumn.

"I would guess it could take 18 months to two years to happen."

Gaming International, the company which owns the stadium, confirmed that 2010 was the target date.

Spokesman Charles St George said: "Our hope is that the stadium will be built before the houses. As a safeguard the building of the stadium must start before the 100th house is occupied."

He said that the new stadium would be built alongside the existing one so that racing could continue.

Coun Justin Thomlinson, cabinet member for culture, leisure and recreation, said: "This development has always been finely balanced as there are so many planning complications. I'm hopeful that a successful outcome will be achieved."

A decision by councillors to resolve to grant, refuse or defer plans will be made and if successful, it will be in the hands of central government to pass before work can start.
