A DATE has been set for the trial of a man accused of a violent robbery.

Terry Stevens, pictured, was hit with a hammer as he made his way home from the Windmill pub, in Freshbrook on October 13.

Appearing at Swindon Crown Court, Sheldon Thomas, 26, of Holbein Court, Grange Park, denied unlawful and malicious assault occasioning grievous bodily harm and robbing Terry Steven's mobile phone and wallet.

After the attack in Worsley Road, Mr Stevens, 51, suffered a fractured cheek and skull, which required 50 stitches and had to undergo brain surgery.

The court heard that Thomas could only be held in custody until April 25.

He was ordered to return to the court on April 21 for the trial.
