A CAMPAIGN to cut the number of fatalities involving cyclists has been launched by Swindon's Community Safety Partnership.

Two hundred reflective jackets and flashing lights will be offered to bike riders after three cyclists were killed on the town's roads in the last three months.

The equipment will be distributed for free on a first come, first serve basis from today.

Insp Nick Elton, from Wiltshire Police's roads policing unit, said: "Cycling is a very effective, healthy and green way to travel, but it is not without its hazards.

"There are some basic steps that cyclists can follow to minimise the risk of them being involved in a collision.

"The first of these is to be visible which is why these cycle safety packs have been put together by the partnership.

"By using the jacket and light at night, and during periods of reduced visibility, this should enable cyclists to at least be seen."

The project is a joint effort between Wiltshire Police, Swindon Council, and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service, which make up the Community Safety Partnership.

The cyclist safety packs are the latest in a series of initiatives which have resulted in council workers giving cycle training for schoolchildren and adults.

Coun Colin Lovell, cabinet member for community and neighbourhoods, said: "Cycling helps to keep our streets and the air we breathe clean.

"The more people that cycle to work, to the shops, school or college the less pollution there is to the environment.

"It is also a well known fact that exercise keeps us healthy by improving general fitness, reducing the risk of heart disease, weight loss and an increased feeling of well-being.

"But safety should always be a priority for anyone taking to the roads on their bicycles.

"I hope the cycle packs will help prevent any further accidents taking place." Mark Fuller, Group Manager for Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service, said: "We have long promoted the importance of road safety, and as a member of the Swindon Safety Partnership we fully support this new initiative aimed at cyclists.

"The campaign is particularly welcome because of its practical approach, especially providing high visibility garments, as we all too often have to deal with the consequences of road accidents.

"We are looking forward to working with our partners on this road safety project."
