THE future of speedway in Swindon has been secured after plans to build a new stadium for the sport were approved by councillors.
The committee members agreed that the new stadium at Blunsdon would bring a much-needed boost to the area.
Alun Rossiter, Swindon Speedway manager, told the committee that refusing the application could spell disaster for the Robins.
He said the current stadium was dilapidated and in need of regeneration.
"We neither own nor control Abbey Stadium," he said. "This redevelopment is a realistic opportunity for the future.
"It may not comply completely with policy but it is an important part of the future. The final decision sits with the national government and this is the time for the committee to do its bit for Swindon."
Coun Brian Mattock (Con, Old Town and Lawn) also supported the plans and spoke about how people from the borough and even outside it were in favour of the new redevelopment.
"When you look at the documents, there have been only 18 objections," he said. "I would therefore recommend to the committee that they approve the proposal."
Coun Eric Shaw (Con, Wroughton and Chiseldon) raised an issue about the parking spaces available and whether there would be sufficient bays, especially on race days.
Jacquie Trajan, from Transportation Services, said: "I have spoken to the developers and have been told that good travel plans have been assured and I am very convinced that it is going to work and there is going to be no knock-on effect involved.
"There are going to be off-site facilities available on race days and bus services will also be provided."
Coun Andrew Bennett (Con, Ridgeway) raised a point about whether the size of the track would be big enough as the stadium would slightly smaller than the present site.
The committee was told track size conformed to league standards.
Darcia Gingell, chairwoman of the Pit Crew supporters' group, said she was delighted with the decision.
She said: "We're extremely pleased. It was the decision we were hoping for.
"This means we have managed to safeguard the future of speedway in Swindon and the future of the Swindon Robins."
