CHILDREN have been given a taste of Indian cooking by those who do it best.

The Jewel In The Crown Indian Restaurant, in Victoria Road, showed children from South Marston Primary School what goes on behind the scenes of a busy restaurant.

Teacher Victoria Plested said: "It was really interesting and the children loved it.

"The Jewel In The Crown were fantastic - they dressed the teachers up in saris and the children had the chance to be in the kitchen as well as find out about Indian culture."

During the visit the 30 children from Years Five and Six had a go at cooking naan bread and chicken tikka masala.

They then enjoyed a meal at the restaurant.

The visit was part of an Indian Focus Week at the school which will end with a day where everyone will wear Indian dress. The money raised will buy goats for a village in India.

The Jewel In The Crown's owner, Muzammil Ali, who has been providing such visits for children from all over Swindon for the last 20 years, said he liked to think that the children who had once visited his restaurant were now probably his customers.
