SPORT and politics have proved a winning combination for a runner aiming to raise money for local causes.
Mark Johnson, political assistant to the Labour group, is taking part in The Grizzly Run in aid of Swindon Mayor Michael Barnes' charities.
The charities are Therapeutic Work in Gardening (TWIGs), which provides support to people with mental health problems, and Swindon Cares, which includes the Swindon Samaritans, the Broadgreen Breakfast Club and Swindon Therapy Centre for Multiple Sclerosis.
Mark, 26, who will take on the 20-mile run on March 9, met members of the charities to find out more about them.
He said: "Charities such as this tend to not get as much publicity.
"I have nearly always done things for bigger charities, but when you talk to the local charities you realise it's a fight for them to get funding to survive."
The Grizzly Run is a multi-terrain run in the Seaton area of Devon involving bogs and beaches, which promises to be an experience.
Mr Johnson has completed various half marathons, such as the Great North Run, but has never attempted this run before.
He said: "A few of my friends have done it. I've been told it is the hardest thing you'll do in your life and you should run the other way.
"I'm not being brave. I'm being absolutely foolish."
Mark, 26, has been training for the run since December and currently aims to fit in four to five runs a week, but admits it has been difficult.
"I'm a completely fair weather runner - there's more motivation in the summer."
He saw the run as the perfect incentive to keep fit, which he believes is very important, particularly for those in full-time employment.
"It's incredibly important, but finding the time is difficult."
However, he believes it is much better to try to work something into your day, such as walking to work.
"I've realised in my work that finding the time to get out and do sport becomes a lot harder.
"You go to the gym and there are some insanely fit people there, but it's about finding what's best for you."
