AWAY from the hustle and bustle of Chippenham, The George Inn in Lacock is a perfect place for a quiet traditional lunch.
The George, dubbed the oldest pub in Lacock, looks the part with a half timbered exterior.
Inside it has a real log fire, traditional décor and friendly helpful staff.
If you a looking for a pub without a plastic menu full of cheeseburgers and nachos then this is the pub for you.
The specials board is changed daily to incorporate fresh ingredients in season.
Although the owners have added a dining room extension we opted to sit in the old pub dining room that is just off from the bar.
Pictures of filming in the village adorn the walls as well as shots of the village through time.
The young staff were friendly and served our lunch at a rapid speed.
After spending about 15 minutes trying to decide from the mouth-watering specials board, I plumped for the broccoli and pasta bake.
One colleague opted for the cod goujons, salad and fries while the other chose mixed vegetable pasta bake with salad.
The pasta bakes were served in small bowls with a side serving of salad and contained a healthy amount of chunky vegetables. Both bakes were complemented by a thick cheese sauce.
The cod was piping hot and tasted fresh.
The portions were a little small and if you are ravenous I would recommend ordering side dishes as you will otherwise leave with your stomach rumbling.
But we all agreed the food tasted home cooked and was ideal for a cold winter's day.
We paid just over £30 for three meals, two glasses of wine and a coke.
So if you are looking for a midweek treat in a traditional rural pub then this is the place for you.
A point worth noting is the car park is at the back of the pub and the entrance is a little narrow so car drivers, beware.
