SWINDON is set to host the most prestigious junior chess tournament outside London.
The annual Wiltshire and West of England event will take place at New College this Saturday and Sunday. It will feature most of the top young players in the country.
If Britain is to have any new Grand Masters in the next 10 to 20 years, they will almost certainly be among the competitors.
Titles will be up for grabs among children aged from under eight to under 18, but the event is open to any junior player.
Entries are accepted up to the weekend but early indications are that there will be at least 260 players.
The most popular age group, the under 12 championship, is also an England trial qualifier. This is set to provide the event's main spectacle as all the contests take place in the college theatre.
Mayor of Swindon Michael Barnes will continue the tradition of opening the competition by making the first move at 9.45am on Saturday.
