A couple from Trowbridge are facing the possibility of having to pay medical bills worth tens of thousands of pounds to bring their premature-born son home from their honeymoon in Turkey.

Louise and Stephen Crawshaw-Bowen were enjoying a two-week holiday in Lara Beach near Antalya when she went into labour prematurely.

Their baby boy, Wolfe, was delivered on Monday (July 25) by caesarean section nearly eight weeks early even though Louise had been cleared ‘fit to fly’ by a UK midwife.

Because his lungs were not fully developed and he has a lung infection, Wolfe was placed in a neonatal intensive care unit with the couple only allowed to visit for up to 30 seconds each time.

The couple have since had to fork out 4,500 euros for Louise’s treatment but Wolfe's bills could rise to tens of thousands of pounds depending on how long he has to stay in hospital, which could be another three weeks.

Despite getting travel insurance, which they believed covered any medical costs for childbirth abroad, their insurers Rock Insurefor have said they cannot cover the claim.

Mrs Crawshaw-Bowen, 37, said: "Before we left I did everything I could to make sure everything was in place.

"I got a fit to fly letter from my midwife, I didn't have any complications in this pregnancy.

“I've just been to my routine appointments and everything has been fine. I got insurance that I thought covered everything."

Stephen, 27, said: "The hospital was like a prison. They would not let my wife leave unless we paid them 4,500 euros. Our point was, we are not going to leave our premature baby in Turkey."

Louise, a mother of five children, works as a mobile nail technician, while Stephen serves with the British Army at Catterick in Yorkshire.

They say they are struggling emotionally and financially as they grapple with their situation.

Louise’s older three children from a previous relationship, Ty, 14, Daisy, 11, and Teddy, five, have already been flown home. Their son, Ronnie, one, is still with them in Turkey but is suffering with sickness and diahorrea in the heat.

The newly-weds have paid £1,700 to extend their stay at their hotel in Antalya until Wednesday (August 3).

They are continuing to have limited contact with their newborn son while Turkish doctors treat his lungs with antibiotics.

Louise said: "I don't even feel like I've had a baby because I had a C-section, he was taken away and I didn't see him. There's been no bonding time. I've only seen him for 30 seconds a day in an incubator."

The couple's family and friends have now set up gofundme fundraising page to help with the spiralling costs which could top more than £100,000.

They have been told that they could be facing a £50,000 bill just to charter a medical plane with an incubator to fly Louise and Wolfe back to Bristol Airport.

The gofundme appeal has already raised more than £8,000 towards its £30,000 target.
