A SWINDON-BORN dancer has made an international leap in her career.
Kialea-Nadine Williams was named Spotlight Modern Female Dancer 2007, but was unable to pick up her award at the Royal Opera House as she was boarding a plane to start a new life with the Australian Dance Theatre.
Kialea said she was surprised she had won the coveted award.
"It's been the best start to the year," said Kialea.
"I've been through so many emotions. I've only recently arrived in Australia and am enjoying the work, people and the sunshine.
"The award was for my performance of Harmonica Breakdown with Phoenix Dance Theatre. I was so shocked to be nominated, which was an honour enough, and I couldn't believe that I had won."
Kialea's father Ron attended the presentation on his daughter's behalf and said he was left speechless when Kialea's name was read out as the winner.
He said: "It was such a proud moment I couldn't speak, so it was a relief that compere Angela Rippon did the talking as I received the award on stage for my daughter.
"Kialea was literally in the air as this took place and I had to wait for some time to tell her she'd won."
Kialea, 26, attended Dorcan School and studied at Swindon Dance.
She started off with children's classes, then the youth talent programme and later completed the foundation course.
"I owe so much to Swindon Dance director Marie McCluskey as well as foundation course teachers Brenda Edwards, Anne Went, Lisa Phillips and Yvonne Evans, " she said.
And Dorcan headteacher Dr Scott Sissons said of Kialea's achievements: "We are absolutely delighted that Kialea's talents are recognised nationally and now internationally.
"She is a credit to the school and an inspiration to other young dancers."
The Australian Dance Theatre is the leading contemporary dance company in Australia, based in Adelaide.
