It was Saturday night and we went for a meal at the Carpenters Arms in the ancient village of Lacock.
The narrow street that leads to the pub is lined with stone cottages and Tudor buildings and the pub is situated by the church and across the road from the Sign of the Angel and the bakery.
It is easy to see how the olde worlde charm of this ancient village has provided the setting for period dramas and Harry Potter films.
The Carpenters Arms is a family run business with a large dining area. The exposed wooden beams, low ceilings and a stone fireplace take the visitor back in time.
We were pleasantly surprised that the main menu offered both meat and vegetarian dishes and a large selection of fish.
Nick started with garlic and mushroom prawns on a large crouton. The prawns were succulent and the garlic sauce was flavoursome.
Lee was going to have soup but decided tomato was too boring and skipped the starters, as did Emma and I because the choice was either fish or chicken liver pate.
For the main course, Nick opted for a tender and succulent chicken in a rich creamy Stilton sauce.Emma chose duck breast accompanied by a sauce made with complementary flavours from sweet orange and warm ginger.
Lee went for the spinach and ricotta cannelloni bursting with fresh spinach and cheese filling topped with a fresh tomato sauce.
I chose a wild mushroom and brandy puff pastry parcel. A taste of brandy complemented the wild flavour of the mushrooms and the rich flavours were toned down with a white sauce.
All meals were served with seasonal vegetables and mash except the cannelloni, which came with fresh salad.
For dessert, we all chose homemade lemon meringue pie with its smooth, tangy filling and crisp but gooey meringue.
The bill totalled £75 and we all agreed the food was delicious.
