IMAGES of the weekly market that used to run in Fleet Street prompted happy memories for readers.

The shots were taken by Robin Earle in around 1983 when it was at its busiest, before it eventually shut down.

Customers would make the trip in to town to buy fresh meat, vegetables, clothing and housewares from the stalls.

Helen Huby: "Oh yes bought a bag of jelly bears from there regularly."

Koren Susan Simons: "I do. Always went there with my mum and nan."

Sharon Randall: "Was brilliant......wish we had something like that now."

Julie Ellis: "Used to go with my daughters and my mum on special occasions.

Jon Davis: "I remember this, loved that Market, got a Meat Loaf T Shirt from there.

Wayne Hunt: "Oh yes used to work there for Bob Grant.

Elaine Alderton: "Loved going there, pity they don’t have something like that now."

Sue Diffey: "Loved going to the market on a Saturday.Met up with my nan and auntie plus my mum."

Toni Brack: "Yes l remember the market in Fleet Street when every Sunday, the market we have now is rubbish there is only four stalls and a meat van."

Tracy Lloyd: "Was the best by far."

Iain Greig: "Oh happy memory and the fruit and Veg at Greenbridge - there was also a French Market. We still have a full set of ovenproof dishes."

Jane Rhoda Gallo: "Need a real market not posh nosh.that people cant afford."

Trudie Goodright: "I had a Saturday job at one of Dougie's shops in Moredon Road.

"Also worked at the Gorse Hill shop and the market in town."

Jonathan Marsh: "Sunday market was a big deal back then as big shops didn’t open on a Sunday back then.

"Our neighbours would drive up from Devizes to go the Swindon Sunday market. Times have changed!"

Kirsty Arrigan: "I now live in Ireland, about eight years ago an Asian gentleman took over our village shop for a year or so.

"When I told him I was from Swindon he said he had a clothes stall in Fleet Street market! What are the chances?"

Mark Jefferies: "Kirsty Arrigan wow I used to work for him."

Hayley Wernham: "Used to love that market and getting my clothes from there."

Tina Lee: "Worked on the bread store. Happy days."

Tricia Caroline: "I remember it well. In my teens, went for the clothes."

Steve Knights: "I used to sell leather jackets and shoes/trainers back in 89/90."

Jose Wiltshire: "I remember the market, you could buy everything you needed for a reasonable price, such a shame it's gone, good memories.

Jacquie Tamkin: "They were good days when it was great to go shopping.

"The stall holders used to remember people and always ask after them l wish things were like that now."
