A BOXING club has punched above its weight by raising almost £3,000 for the Callum Kaye appeal.

Penhill ABC Boxing Club raised £2,825 during a sponsored run.

Callum, five, from Penhill, has a brain tumour and his family is pinning its hopes on revolutionary treatment in America.

But to get him there they need to raise £300,000.

The latest piece of fundraising saw members of the boxing club race around the County Ground.

In all 12 boys from the club took part, along with three coaches and five friends and family.

"The boys kept running and running and running," said Josie Spruce, the secretary of the organising committee and mother of one of the boys.

"I believe the group's efforts were hugely successful.

"It was as if they were facing gale force winds that day, but everyone still showed up.

"The run was very rewarding for all the lads. They all feel very passionate about it so everyone felt like they should pitch in.

"I just hope it helps Callum get through this ordeal.

"They used Callum as the driving force so that they could keep running."

Mrs Spruce believes that two of the boys deserved special congratulations.

She added: "They would not stop running. Adam Goddard and Simon Knowles completed six miles each, and impressed us to bits.

"The group just want to wish the best to Callum and we hope this treatment that he is receiving works for him."

A group which took to the streets in their cars was also helping Callum out last weekend.

Numerous cars including Minis, Worsleys, Rovers and Triumphs, some 50 years old, turned up raised £800 for the appeal.

The route took the vehicles from the County Ground in Swindon to Devizes, Pewsey, through Marlborough, and back to the County Ground.

Peggy-Sue Ford, organiser of the Hub Cap Austin and Rover Charity Drive in Aid of Callum Appeal, said: "I would like to say thank you to everyone who participated.

"We just hope this helps Callum get back on the road to recovery."
