FIREFIGHTERS from Stratton will be piloting an arson prevention scheme tomorrow.

Members of Blue Watch will be inspecting Kingsdown School's premises with students from Fire Watch.

Fire Watch will see 12 14 to 15-year-old students taking on responsibility for monthly checks of the school premises, with the aim of uncovering potential arson hot spots.

The inspection will cover basic checks such as waste management, perimeter fencing security, and notification of incidents of graffiti, vandalism and signs of arson.

Bruce Weatherston, Blue Watch manager, said: "What we want to do is highlight the risks that can lead to arson, and encourage the students to develop a sense of pride and care in their school.

"We've trained the volunteers to conduct basic arson-specific risk assessments, and the school has committed to take action when problems are reported."

The initial pilot will run until the summer, when the students will be invited to spend a day doing a range of firefighting activities at Stratton Fire Station to thank them for their hard work during the project.
