JAMIE Cox is pleading for a tougher test next month as he looks to step up his professional boxing education.

The Swindon southpaw has sailed through his opening year as a pro but believes it is now time to start pitting himself against better boxers.

Four wins out of his first four professional fights have installed plenty of confidence into the former Walcot man and he is looking for promoter/manager Frank Warren to now improve the calibre of opponents.

Cox's next appearance will be in the Cardiff International Arena on March 22 on the undercard of Gavin Rees's world title bout and he insists he is in better shape than ever.

The Wales fight should be his last over four rounds, with six probably his next distance, although as far as the Commonwealth Games gold medallist is concerned - he is ready to go all the way.

He said: "I just want to start fighting over 12 rounds already. I have never been so strong and am pushing over middleweights.

"It is a shame that the fight in March will still be over four rounds but after that I have to step up. I have never felt better and am ready for a real blow now.

"I will know who I am fighting very soon and they have to find me a better opponent now. Look at the guys I have fought so far, I have beaten them easily, and it is time for me to have more of a test.

"I know I have to be patient but I have come through the first few fights easily.

"I even won at middleweight last time so I am ready for a tough test."

Cox has started his training schedule for his March test at Richie Woodhall's gym in Birmingham, and he admits even he is surprised by how well things are going.

He said: "I didn't realise I could get this strong. I just feel brilliant at the moment and can't wait for the next fight to come about."
