It’s iconic. And it’s 50.
But like many of us in our sixth decade, the Magic Roundabout might be showing its age a little.
Pictures of the famous, or infamous, junction just by Swindon Town’s County Ground show the collection of five mini-roundabouts orbiting a central island is starting to look a little less than pristine.
Some of the edges of the mini-roundabouts themselves are fraying, losing the bricks delineating the raised white islands and having the gaps patched by asphalt.
The directional islands that keep motorists heading in the right direction for individual roundabouts are similarly starting to lose definition.
Perhaps most important for a junction with cars moving in all directions; the arrows and markings on the road surface telling drivers where to go in what can be a confusing maelstrom of cars, are starting to fade.
Respondents on the Swindon Advertiser’s Facebook page were split between those who love the landmark and those who feel it needs a spruce up.
Paul Spearing said: “I found when it was first installed the best way was to use it as one big roundabout and drive around the outside easy but true. The fact is it has stood the test of time.”
Cairney Duncanson added: “I love this roundabout - and it makes sense when you get there!”
David Norman is also a fan: “Let's hope the council leave it alone!!! If it ain't broke don't fix it!!
But Deano Dean thinks it could do with some work: “Fix up the bloody road - the Moon’s getting jealous because there are more crevices on that roundabout.”
Michelle Smith thought a wash and brush-up would be a fitting present: “For its 50th birthday could it have a bit of a makeover. I'm sure it could be made to look more attractive.
Lisa Hynes Miller was somewhat blunter: “Could do with some revamp looks awful.”
But it looks like the Pride of Swindon might have to get by for a little while as it is.
A Swindon Borough Council spokesperson said: “We’d love to be able to give the Magic Roundabout a birthday makeover, but we have a limited amount of money available for road maintenance and we have to prioritise where that money is spent.
“Considering its age and the fact thousands of motorists use it each day, the junction is in reasonably good condition.
“We do carry out repairs from time to time when it is needed and we have plans to do some patching repairs on the County Road approach next spring as part of our planned highway maintenance programme.”
