A NEW supermarket is taking shape on the outskirts of the Swindon borough.
Aldi is building a Highworth branch in the Blackworth Industrial Estate.
Work began earlier this year, in April, and the main framework of the retail site has now been constructed.
Access to the site is fenced and coned off while the area is made ready for shoppers.
It has taken a few years for the supermarket giant to get to this stage of the development.
Plans submitted in 2018 received a lot of support from Highworth Town Council and the town's residents.
Swindon Borough Council considered rejecting the proposal because it was feared that the new shop would lead to the high street losing trade, but a petition signed by hundreds of citizens convinced them otherwise.
The plans were approved in July 2018 but hit another setback when Midcounties Co-op, which owns what is currently Highworth's only supermarket, appealed against the decision.
This appeal failed, the approval was not contested further, and a date to start construction was confirmed - but then disruption caused by the Covid pandemic threw another spanner in the works.
After all that, it seems the project is now progressing smoothly.
A sign outside the construction site highlights that the company is hiring for the new supermarket.
