A NAIL beautician from Royal Wootton Bassett who set up her own business when she was just 17 has been shortlisted for two national awards.
Hayley Candlish of HC Nails started her mobile beauty bar 14 years ago and has helped hundreds of people spruce up their nails and eyelashes.
She’s become so popular that her waiting list for new clients is three months long.
She said: “I went for job interviews after college and kept getting told they were looking for someone with experience. After yet another knockback, I thought ‘I’ll do it myself then’.
“I started a mobile nail bar then started working out of my front room after I had two kids.
“It’s quite hectic but I wouldn’t change it for the world. I like making other people feel confident, pampering them and giving them some time to just relax.
“Even when I had no clients during lockdown, I painted my nails because this is my happy place, it helps me mentally and it has helped my clients through tough patches.
“I’ve always loved being creative and this industry is constantly changing and growing, which is exciting.
“This job has helped me create brilliant close friendships. Some customers are new, some have been with me from day one.
“I was bullied at school, so I wanted to achieve something to prove those who doubted me wrong. My tattoo says ‘success is the best revenge’.”
The 31-year-old is now in the running for the Best Gel Nails and Nail Technician of the Year categories at the UK Hair and Beauty Awards.
She added: “This makes me realise how far my business has come. It’s been such a tough few years for the industry, and there were many times where my business's future was touch and go.
“So to not only still have a business, but to be recognised for my work makes me extremely proud.
“A huge thank you to all my clients, old and new, for the support they have given me over the years.”
The UK Hair and Beauty Awards celebrate the hair and beauty industry to support businesses and expose all candidates to new opportunities via social media.
A spokesman said: “We are breaking down barriers, helping contestants build followings and recognition – even if they don’t win.
“That is why they are celebrating the entire process of the competition and all the amazing talent that has entered.”
