A Swindon cycle firm has been celebrating after marking 25 years in business.

The company has two stores in the town, one in Stratton and one in Shrivenham Road near the Magic Roundabout.

Stephen Mitchell from Stratton has been running the business for over three years since taking over in 2019.

On Monday September 12, the business hosted a special event with GB athlete and triathlon champion Ben Cumberland in attendance.

Swindon Cycles has supported local athletes including Ben who has been with the business for three seasons.

They supported Ben along with help from Giant UK to provide a race bike for this year.

The 19-year-old from Swindon is going from strength to strength having won the 2021 DUATHLON Junior World Championship for Great Britain, before going on to win the British National Triathlon Junior Championship & European Cup Junior Championships.

He has competed in countries across the world including Portugal, Croatia, and Canada.

Mr Cumberland has been doing triathlon since the age of eight, when it was recommended to him by a primary school teacher.

General Manager of Swindon Cycles, Stephen Mitchell said: “We are a small bike shop with great family heritage and to support someone like Ben who is competing for world titles and going on to bigger and better things, that for us is amazing.

“Who knows next year he may win another world title.”

Ben Cumberland added: “I’d like to hope that I am doing Stephen proud, he’s helping me out.

“He’s been a big help over the last three years, he’s provided me with a bike to race on and that bike has taken me to some strong results.”

Mr Cumberland added that he wanted to remain grounded with a potential spot in Team GB’s Olympic squad coming in the near future, with the next games in 2024.

“I’ve just got to keep aiming higher and higher and just as hard as I can to get as far in the sport as I can and for some more senior racing such as world cups.

“Every athlete aims to compete on that Olympic stage and those games only come every four years, so that would the cream of the earth to race there.

“Every high is the best and every low, everyone goes through it and it’s getting through those lows that makes you stronger.”
