Most elective clinics will go ahead at Great Western Hospital despite the bank holiday scheduled for Monday.

Thousands of appointments have been cancelled nationally due to the Queen's funeral on Monday September 19.

But hospital trusts could make their own decisions and Swindon's hospital decided to run clinical activity as normal as a large number were booked in for treatment.

The majority of patients were "keen" to keep their appointments, GWH's chief executive Kevin McNamara has shared.

All patients with appointments have been contacted which is in line with instructions from NHS England. This was to confirm whether or not they were able to attend.

GWH's chaplain will lead a service for staff working that day and there will be opportunities for anyone to take part in the national two minutes silence and watch the funeral.

Mr McNamara tweeted: "My thanks to colleagues who will be working to see patients on what we know will be a difficult day for many.

"We are pleased that the majority of elective clinics will continue so patients can get the treatment they need."

A GWH spokeswoman added: "We understand and respect the sensitivities presented by the recent sad news."

Parking will also be free for patients and staff on Monday.
