Action is being taken after calls to protect the historic Swindon Railway Village from damage apparently caused by frequent bus use.

Locals have claimed that buses from six routes that pass through the Heritage Action Zone are causing damage to the roads and buildings within it.

Consequently, councillors past and present Bob Wright and Junab Ali pressed the council's cabinet about when buses might be banned from the area during a meeting last year.

Now the council is seeking opinions from members of the public on plans to do just that.

In its latest Highways newsletter, the council said: "As part of our work on the Swindon Heritage Action Zone, we are running a public consultation seeking views on a proposal to reduce the number of buses travelling through the Railway Village.

"The option being presented would reroute all outbound buses from Emlyn Square-Church Place so they use Faringdon Road and Park Lane instead. As part of this proposal, two bus stops would need to be relocated, to replace those no longer served by outbound bus services at Emlyn Square and Church Place."

This consultation is open until Friday, 4 November.
