A well-loved pasty shop in the town centre was forced to close ahead of a redevelopment scheme by the council.

Pedestrians in Swindon's town centre were met by a closed storefront and signs saying the Cornish Bakehouse by The Parade on Fleming Way had closed.

A sign at the window of the old shopfront said: "This store has now closed. Thank you for your custom. Our Regent Street Swindon shop is open, we look forward to seeing you there."

A spokesperson from the Cornish Bakehouse said: "We did not make the choice to close the Fleming Way site.

"The shop was the subject of a compulsory purchase by Swindon Borough Council and will be demolished as part of the Kimmerfields redevelopment.

"Our shop in Regent Street remains open and we look forward to continuing to serve our loyal customers in Swindon.

"We are hopeful of opening a second shop in Swindon as part of the new bus station development in the future."

Earlier this month, the Survivor Charity Shop was forced to close and move further along the Parade as well, due to the development, which looks to remove the pedestrian underpass at Fleming Way and lower the road to the same level as the shopping area.

This is also the reason why the Cornish Bakehouse was forced to close.

Both the Cornish Bakehouse and Swindon Borough Council confirmed that a new, second pasty shop will open in the town centre again when the new Fleming Way works have been completed.

A Swindon Borough Council spokesperson said: “These units were closed as the work on Fleming Way will involve lowering the road and demolishing the underpass – which includes the shops on either side.

“We have worked closely with both the Survivor Charity shop and Cornish Bakehouse to try and find them alternative locations in the town centre. Before Fleming Way closed, the Survivor charity shop had already moved further along The Parade and remains open, and Cornish Bakehouse has a unit open on Regent Street.

“It’s important to note that no businesses have been lost as a result of these closures. And the work being done on the road will help to increase land values in the area which will bring in more businesses and investment into the town centre.”
