A TOURNAMENT fundraised for two good causes close to the Mayor of Swindon's heart.

The Swindon Bangladeshi community organised a Badminton tournament last Sunday in aid of the Mayor’s charities.

They are STEP Swindon, which helps young people around the town, and The ZamZam Trust, which supports projects that tackle poverty in Bangladesh.

Overall, 80 teams from across the country - including teams as far afield as Cambridge - attended the tournament.

The event raised £1,000 overall. Coun Abdul Amin handed the winner's trophy to the triumphant team.

He said: "This will make a big difference. I wanted to bring communities together, especially the younger generation, and the best way to do that is through sport. The teams were from different communities, it was wonderful.

"Although the wining team was Swindon and the runners-up were Bristol, every team had a great game of badminton and enjoyed the game and hospitality.

"My sincere thanks to Abdul Rahim, Walid Miah and everyone involved in organising this tournament."

The Mayor is in the process of organising football and cricket tournaments which he hopes, along with the badminton, will become annual events.
