A new cycleway from Royal Wootton Bassett to Swindon is being planned.

Wiltshire Council has announced it is working with Swindon Borough Council, Sustrans and National Highways to create a path which would provide a segregated route for cyclists to travel over the M4.

The route is in the design stage which will be completed by early 2023.

A cycle path connecting these places has been called for by residents for years.

Swindon Bicycle Users Group petitioned for the route in 2016.

It said: “A safe, traffic-free, direct cycle path could save 111,000 motor vehicle trips across Junction 16 each year.”

Once the designs are finished they will be shared for community feedback and the councils will seek to secure final agreements with any affected landowners.

Following that, the council will need to submit a planning application to secure the use of the new route, and this would be subject to the full statutory planning process. 

Wiltshire Council is also reviewing a proposal for a cycling and walking way on Countess Road, Amesbury, that would link the town centre to Woodhenge and on to Larkhill and Durrington.
