How does a recently elected Swindon Borough Councillor find himself sharing a stage with the leader of the Labour Party, then on the front page of The Guardian newspaper?

Apparently, it’s just luck.

When Sir Keir Starmer made his keynote speech to the Labour Party conference in Liverpool this week, eagle-eyed viewers may have seen a familiar face just behind him to his left- councillor for Rodbourne Cheney, elected in May, Will Stone

Coun Dtone said: “I was there as a delegate and someone just came up to me and said did I want to be on the stage as Keir Starmer made his speech.

“Of course I said yes. I wasn’t nervous about yawning or making a face, I wasn’t self-conscious about being on national TV – but I was a bit worried about clapping or standing up too soon. They’d said not to stand up before the rest of the delegates did, and she was really having to stop herself.”

Although he couldn’t see what the rest of the country could see, Coun Stone said he enjoyed the experience: “It was a great speech and it was a great conference. I was there as the delegate for North Swindon and I was in the hall for everybody’s speech, Sir Keir, Ed Miliband, Angela Rayner. We’re really heading in the right direction.”
