A former deputy headteacher’s memory is to be honoured this weekend as the London Marathon gets underway.
Chris Kirkland worked at Royal Wootton Bassett Academy for many years before he passed away from prostate cancer in March this year.
Mr Kirkland was also a volunteer on matchdays at Swindon Town, helping out as a steward and as a turnstile operator.
A tribute posted on the Royal Wootton Bassett town football club website after his death described him as a “hugely popular, inspirational figure”.
It reads: “Chris made a remarkable contribution to sporting life in Royal Wootton Bassett and the wider community thanks to his infectious enthusiasm, passion for sport and a generosity of spirit that knew no ends.”
Laura Humphrey from Chichester is the partner of Chris’ grandson and is now set to take on the London Marathon in memory of the much-loved teacher.
She is raising money for The Institute of Cancer Research
Ms Humphrey said Chris did so much for others.
"Even in his last couple of weeks, when he was bed-bound, he still put everyone else first," she said.
"I remember my partner and I were moving house at the time, and Chris had written a list of everything we’d need to do and look out for – he was so thoughtful, even to the very end of his life.
“Chris was an inspiration to a hell of a lot of people. He did so much for the community, helping bring joy, opportunity and happiness to so many young people. I just hope I can do him proud.”
