I worked in local radio for most of my career so it was with huge interest that is listened to new Prime Minister Liz Truss be interviewed on several stations across the UK.

When I was on GWR breakfast we didn’t have Tony Blair calling the show, unless he played the “guess the mystery sound” competition we ran.

I don’t know if he was that desperate to win the prize money. That makes me think Gordon Brown probably called in during 2008.

Liz Truss spent one morning doing short interviews on different BBC breakfast shows including one I used to work on.

I don’t know if the PM was expecting an easy time on local radio.

Perhaps she thought it was going to be a phone-in about the biggest vegetables you’ve ever seen or what’s your favourite biscuit. That’s the topic all cliched local DJs do when they run out of good ideas. Instead she had a morning of grilling.

The problem with doing so many interviews in a row is that the patterns could be spotted easily.

It didn’t matter what first question was asked, Liz’s first answer was a reminder of the difficulty we faced with our fuel bills.

If an interviewer asked about interest rates she’d say the same answer about the Bank of England.

If someone mentioned mortgage rates there was a stock answer about global economics and if someone mentioned tax cuts for the rich the answer somehow was about the energy price measures.

If you’d have heard that in one interview you wouldn’t have noticed which bits were on a script but when you heard Liz’s groundhog day play out it was clear she was just reading lines.

It’s a shame she didn’t call GWR back when I worked there, she would have said the “phrase that pays” easily if she stuck to a script.

If things got really nasty during the questioning Ms Truss had the line, “I don’t accept the premise of the question,” which is why she’d be so bad on Ken Bruce’s Pop Master.

It’s easy to presume Liz Truss thought BBC local radio would be an easy ride but I’m proud of the quality of journalism those stations provided.

I’m sure it’s a media experiment that Liz will never repeat.

However, I still present a local radio show now. You can find the podcast Mr Steve N Allen on the Radio on iTunes. Liz, if you want to come on my show you are very welcome.

Don’t expect an easy time. I’ll asking the really difficult questions.

If you say your favourite biscuit is the Bourbon we’ll be rowing all show.
