A thief has stolen several drain covers around the Swindon borough, the council has said.

Swindon Borough Council said that drain covers have suddenly gone missing in the last few weeks.

CCTV footage has caught a possible suspect seemingly parking up, getting out, taking a drain cover, getting back in his vehicle, and leaving the scene.

A Swindon Borough Council spokesman said: "We need your help identifying this person in connection with the theft of several drain covers across the Borough.

"Our team has responded to several reports of missing drain covers over the last few days, and we’re keen for the person responsible to be found as it poses a serious safety risk for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers as they are being removed from pavements and the road.

"If you have any information on the individual, including a registration number or partial registration, call Swindon Police on 101 quoting police reference number 54220103375."

One concerned Highworth resident told the Adver: "Loads of roadside drain covers are missing, there's dangerous open holes left uncovered by the council.

"There could be series injuries to people or damage to cars. It seems to be a spate of late. The thieves have a very distinctive caged pickup truck. Roads police need to pull over every scrap truck and searching them."
