Up to 100 new houses may be built in Calne according to new plans under consideration by the council.
The homes may be built on land off Spitfire Road however there is already opposition to the proposals which have been put forward by Robert Hitchens Ltd.
The application site is located on the eastern side of Calne, approximately 1km from Calne town centre.
The site is made up of four fields and is located on the eastern built development edge of Calne, within the Calne Without parish.
It is not stated in the plans how many bedrooms the houses will have.
The site has no previous planning history but the application argues the houses will help contribute to the council’s five-year housing supply plans.
An online public consultation event was held between March 24 and April 11 this year, with more than 500 local residents advised of the consultation by leaflets delivered to their homes.
The plans say there were objections from residents including over increasing traffic on Spitfire Road.
30 per cent of the housing will be affordable.
Calne resident Ginette Alexander has commented on the application and said: “Enough already! Go build somewhere else Calne has too many houses not enough services. Before long we will merge with lower Compton and the tip will be a playground”
Sean Doyle added: “This was not part of the Calne plan. Calne does not have the infrastructure to support the plan, let alone any additional development.
“The roundabout is already dangerous with near misses occurring on a daily basis which will only increase with the proposed developments in the area. For the safety of the community, this should not go ahead. A nature reserve around the attenuation pond would be much more suitable.”
The proposal says: “The vision for land off Spitfire Road is to create an attractive place for future generations, which sits comfortably within the surrounding countryside and creates a positive sense of place that fosters well-being, inclusion and overall community cohesion.
“This proposal will build on the special characteristics and features of Calne whilst taking design cues from the consented and newly built schemes to deliver a high-quality development.”
The plans became valid on October 11 and the deadline for the council consultation is November 24.
