Dozens of Swindon residents marched through the town centre on Saturday to protest against the current political climate.

Members of the Communications Workers Union, Swindon for Europe and climate change activists took part in a 'Britain is Broken' demonstration at what they see as a lack of government action on a number of issues.

The group wants the UK Government to tackle a number of issues, including nationalising energy, water, mail and rail and ending Britain’s low-pay crisis.

They are also demanding a general election in order to remove the Conservatives from power.

Furthermore, the People’s Assembly wants to draw attention to the cost-of-living crisis which is affecting businesses and people right across the country.

The groups gathered at Regent Circus, where a number of representatives made speeches on why in their view ‘Britain is Broken.’

Led by Tristan Strange who was recently convicted of wilfully obstructing the highway, the group marched all the way to the Hub on the Parade.

Speaking after the protest, Tristan said: “It was amazing for us to come together, all of these groups have a common cause in ending austerity and making sure there’s an equality of life.

“You can see that we have strength in our groups and things are really building.

“We need to do better at conveying our message, but I am really pleased with how it went.

“The reason why we are marching is we want an end to cost of living crisis and we want our public services to be brought back into public ownership.”

Tony Hilliard who represents the Swindon’s people assembly said: “Austerity is a government policy that cuts public services, we want public services protected and restored.

“Look at the activists that have turned out at very short notice, people still do care.

“They are struggling to make ends meet and put a roof over their head, enough is enough.

“In our day, if one person was working in the household, they could feed themselves, have a car or have a holiday.

“Today three people split shifts, working zero hours contract, working through the night and they don’t get enough and that’s why I am protesting.”
