Vehicles have been turned back by police at the bridge over the scene of a serious crash on the A419 in Swindon.
The incident in the early hours on one of the town's main routes has caused traffic chaos in the area.
Police were called at around 2.30am and shut the dual carriageway in both directions.
Wanborough Road bridge is also closed and there are long delays as traffic diverts around Swindon.
Police expect the road to be closed for several hours.
One Wanborough resident said: “I saw the road closure sign but just assumed there was a bit of the road for the Redland’s Grove development that I couldn’t go on.
"After getting stuck behind the two sets of traffic lights I made it to Poplar’s Nursery and Lotmead where a roadblock had been put in place just before the bridge and a police officer was turning people around to go back through the Wanborough road.
"Dozens of people had made the same mistake, it’s set me back about twenty minutes. Lots of people not very happy.”
