POLICE have confirmed that a man has died in an incident that has closed part of the A419 in Swindon.
The collision happened at around 2.30am and involved a pedestrian being struck by a vehicle near the Merlin Way bridge.
A Wiltshire Police spokesman said: "Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time."
The main road has been closed in both directions at Dorcan Way and at the White Hart roundabout near the Honda factory while police investigate the scene, and is expected remain shut until late in the evening.
This has caused gridlock around Swindon as traffic is diverted away from the area.
Drivers are advised to seek alternative routes and allow extra time for their journeys, particularly during the afternoon rush hour.
The police spokesman added: "Our enquiries are ongoing to ascertain the facts surrounding this incident.
"We are asking that anyone who may have driven along the A419 in the early hours to check their vehicle and contact us if you see any damage or have any other concerns.
"We would also like to hear from anyone who may have recorded dashcam footage at the time and location of the incident.
"If you can help, please call the Serious Collision Investigation Team on 01225 694597 and quote log number 19 of November 16. Alternatively, email SCIT@wiltshire.police.uk"
