A SWINDON takeaway has received the lowest possible food hygiene rating.
Inspectors from Swindon Borough Council have slapped M J Kebab & Pizzas in Unit 10 of Cavendish Square on Whitbourne Avenue with zero out of five grade.
This means urgent improvement is necessary for the Park North business.
The inspection carried out on October 21 highlighted problems with the hygienic handling of food - including its preparation, cooking, re-heating, cooling and storage - which requires major improvements.
Urgent action is needed to sort out the system and checks in place to ensure that food sold or served is safe to eat, as well as have more evidence that staff know about food safety, and ensure the food safety officer has confidence that standards will be maintained in the future.
It's not all bad news for the kebab shop - the cleanliness and condition of the facilities and building (including having the appropriate layout, ventilation, hand washing facilities, and pest control) to enable good food hygiene was deemed generally satisfactory.
According to the Food Standards Agency, this assessment means that, out of Swindon's 133 takeaways with ratings, 86 have the full five-out-of-five while M J Kebab & Pizzas is the only one with a zero rating.
